SafetyWing Travel Insurance: Best Long-Term Travel Protection

Many people are ditching their 9-5s in pursuit of the digital nomad lifestyle. While it’s certainly a romantic proposition, it doesn’t come without its costs. And one of the most important costs associated with traveling long-term is investing in a good travel insurance policy. One of the most popular policies on the market right now is an offering from the portfolio of SafetyWing travel insurance (and for good reason–it has fantastic coverage!). The SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is by far one of the best policies for digital nomads considering making travel their full-time gig. I’ll get into the reasons why later in this post!

Long-term travel can be unpredictable–especially with considerations like COVID-19, threats of war, and natural disasters. With so many travel insurance policy options to choose from, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed while trying to figure out which one to purchase.

In this blog post, I will provide some key things to consider while comparing travel insurance policies. I will also provide you with information about one of my favorite SafetyWing travel insurance policies available to digital nomads and travelers alike: SafetyWing Nomad Insurance!

SafetyWing Travel Insurance has COVID-19 Coverage

One of the most important factors to look for when comparing travel insurance in this day and age is whether COVID-19 quarantine coverage is included. Personally, I will no longer travel without a travel insurance policy that covers COVID-19. If I test positive for COVID-19 while abroad and I’m required to quarantine for any reason whatsoever, I want to be sure that my travel insurance helps offset that cost!

This is especially helpful considering different countries, cities, and regions all have varying protocols surrounding COVID. Even if you’re fully vaccinated and boosted, you still want to make sure you invest in a long-term travel insurance policy that has COVID-19 coverage.

Luckily, SafetyWing travel insurance offers a policy called SafetyWing Nomad Insurance and this policy includes COVID-19 coverage! Specifically, SafetyWing Nomad Insurance provides $50 a day for up to 10 days toward required quarantine costs. You can read more about SafetyWing’s COVID-19 coverage benefits in their full policy breakdown available on the SafetyWing travel insurance website.

Coverage for Travel AND Medical Needs

Thankfully, you no longer need to purchase two separate travel insurance policies as a full-time traveler or digital nomad in order to be covered for travel expenses and medical expenses. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance bundles these two types of policies into one, making it incredibly easy to purchase and use during your trip.

One simple way to determine whether a company or insurance policy can provide you with both travel and medical coverage simultaneously is to search “travel medical insurance for digital nomads” or “travel medical insurance for travelers” on Google or your preferred search engine.

The reason you’d want a travel medical insurance policy as opposed to just one or the other is because you’ll have access to everything in one policy–this saves you time and money. It also gives you access to coverage for doctors, hospitals, emergency medical evacuations, lost luggage, travel delays, and more–all for just one cost.

Finding long-term travel insurance as a digital nomad is already challenging enough. No need to make it even more complicated by having to search for a travel insurance policy on top of a medical insurance policy. Just bundle them into one plan to save yourself the headache.

Print out the detailed policy before your trip and bring it with you! It’s always good to stay informed and have a hard-copy on your person at all times.

SafetyWing Travel Insurance offers Home Country Coverage

Another thing to consider when looking for travel medical insurance is whether or not you’ll be traveling back to your home country during your trip, and for how long. Many travel insurance companies do not provide coverage in your home country.

You never know what will happen or whether you’ll need to suddenly travel home for a family event or emergency, so I usually recommend looking for a policy that has some sort of home country coverage, even if it’s limited. Some coverage is better than no coverage at all.

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance does, in fact, provide home country coverage! For every 3-month period during which you are covered, eligible medical expenses incurred in the U.S. are covered up to a maximum of 15 days with SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance policy. If your home country is outside of the U.S., eligible medical expenses incurred in your home country are covered up to a maximum of 30 days for every 3-month period you’re covered.

Low Cost and Upfront Payment

Another thing to think about is the overall cost and whether you need to pay for the policy upfront. This will look different with each company based on the length of time you’re requesting coverage for, and what type of coverage you’re requesting. Keep that in mind as you’re browsing.

Not all travel insurance companies require the full payment upfront if you’re traveling on a long-term trip, but some do. Don’t get caught in an awkward situation where you have to pay hundreds of dollars at once. This goes back to reading the fine print and scouring the policy for specifics!

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is great because you’ll only need to worry about locking in one low price at the beginning of your sign-up journey. It’s relatively inexpensive and starts at around $45 for 4 weeks of coverage. Plus, instead of having to pay for the policy to cover your entire trip in one payment, SafetyWing will instead automatically charge a recurring payment every 28 days until you cancel. This makes the investment considerably less painful for your wallet compared to having to pay for months of coverage up front.

There are also optional add-ons with SafetyWing Nomad Insurance including adventure sports coverage, electronics theft coverage, and U.S. travel coverage. With these add-ons, you’ll only be paying for what you need!

You Can Purchase SafetyWing Travel Insurance Before or During Your Trip

Some travel insurance companies require travelers to purchase their policy prior to their trip, or specify how long their trip will last up-front. This can be a hassle for digital nomads and long-term travelers because you might not know how long you’ll be traveling for. You might also not realize you need long-term travel insurance until you’re already half-way across the world and enjoying your trip!

Perhaps one of the biggest perks of SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is that you can actually purchase a policy before your depart or at any point during your journey abroad! This is a huge differentiating factor for me and, I’m sure, for other travelers, as well.

With all of that being said, SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is a great option for long-term travelers looking for a policy that combines the best benefits of a travel insurance policy and a medical insurance policy into one! Of course, make sure to do your own independent research and check it out for yourself here to see if it would be a good fit for you and your travel plans.

  1. This post was SO informative, thank you Sydney! <3

I've always wondered whether travel insurance is really worth it or not – people seem to have such conflicting opinions. But I definitely would rather be covered than not – especially after COVID. Going to be looking into SafetyWing Nomad Insurance for sure.
