35 Best things to do in juneau, alaska from a cruise ship
- Canoeing along Mendenhall Lake
- Preparing to launch the canoes out on Mendenhall Lake
- Mendenhall Glacier seen from the canoe on Mendenhall Lake
1. Visit the Mendenhall Glacier
If you’ve seen any photos or videos of Juneau, Alaska, chances are you’ve probably seen footage of the mammoth Mendenhall Glacier. Nothing beats seeing it in real life, though! This is probably one of the most popular excursions in Alaska, and it’s well worth the time to venture out to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center to learn about the glacier firsthand.
While you’re at the Visitor Center, you can explore the exhibits and observation areas showcasing the stunning Mendenhall Glacier. There are also some scenic viewpoints and walking trails nearby to soak it all in!
I loved my experience canoeing out to the face of Mendenhall Glacier but it was certainly an upper-body workout!

2. Hike or Kayak to Nugget Falls
While you’re at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, you should also take the short hike out to Nugget Falls. Nugget Falls Trail is a relatively easy hike and well worth the indescribable feeling of standing at the base of a 370+ foot waterfall. If you stand too close, you will get wet!
Nugget Falls Trail is roughly 2-miles roundtrip but it’s definitely easy and doable as the pathway is paved for the majority of the way. I highly recommend this trail to anyone looking to feel immersed in nature in Juneau!
If you want to go hiking and see epic views but don’t feel safe or comfortable going on your own, I recommend joining in on this guided hiking tour that takes you along a 2-4 mile hike to get great views of Nugget Falls and the surrounding rainforest.
There are also several companies that offer kayaking and canoeing tours on Mendenhall Lake to see Nuggets Falls and Mendenhall Glacier from the water. During my first Alaska cruise with Holland America Line, I booked a canoeing tour and it was epic! The magnitude of the glacier when you’re up close to its face is unreal.
3. Packraft to Norris Glacier
If you’re looking for the most scenic, iconic experience in Juneau, this is it. This tour starts off with a floatplane trip out to Norris Glacier, where visitors will then hike, packraft, and walkabout on the glacier!
This excursion is pricey, but totally worth every penny for the opportunity to do even just one of three amazing experiences packed into one excursion.
4. Look for Humpbacks on a Whale Watching Tour
There’s nothing quite like the thrill of seeing a whale breach the surface just a few hundred feet from your boat. Juneau is one of the best places in the world to spot humpback whales because of their migratory patterns! If you’re visiting on a cruise, a whale watching tour is undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable excursions you can book.
Many whale watching tours leave right from the cruise port area and take you deep into the waters of Auke Bay, where whales are frequently spotted feeding, diving, and even showing off with a tail slap or two. If you’re lucky, you might even see bubble-net feeding.
Some tours also include cozy extras like snacks, hot chocolate, or even local craft beer, making the experience even better. I highly recommend doing a whale watching excursion during your Alaska cruise, you won’t regret it!

5. Rise Above Juneau on Goldbelt Tramway
Ride the Goldbelt Tram to the top of Mount Roberts for breathtaking views of Juneau and the surrounding landscapes. This is an exciting option for an excursion in Juneau because you get to soar over the surrounding area and witness the natural beauty of Alaska from above (plus you get a drink token for a beer at the top with this tour!).
There is also a hiking trail that leads to the top of Mount Roberts if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s not for the faint of heart, as it climbs nearly 4,000 feet in elevation over 4.5-miles. The views are insane, and it’s an incredible experience if the weather cooperates. My personal recommendation if you’re up to the challenge is to hike up and take the tram back down! To access the trail, start at the Basin Road trailhead.
6. Take a Juneau Icefield Helicopter Tour
If you’ve ever wanted to do a helicopter ride over an icefield, Juneau is the best place to do it on an Alaska cruise! There are several companies that lead helicopter tours over the Juneau Icefield, and your cruise line might even offer an excursion through a vendor of their choosing.
This is an Alaska bucket list excursion, and it’s absolutely worth splurging on! The views, memories, and photos you’ll experience during this excursion are unmatched. I’d argue it’s one of the best excursions in all of Alaska!

7. Walk Around Downtown Juneau
Just steps from the cruise dock, downtown Juneau is packed with historic charm, colorful storefronts, and locally owned shops that are perfect for browsing. Whether you want to stroll at your own pace or sit back and go on a guided tour of downtown, exploring the heart of Juneau is a must.
This entire downtown area is super walkable, so even a couple of hours ashore gives you time to soak up the vibe. You can definitely do and see a lot in Juneau, even with only a couple hours in port!
If you prefer to wander solo, don’t miss:
- Heritage Coffee Roasting Co. for a local caffeine fix
- Alaska State Capitol Building and Governor’s Mansion for a quick peek into Alaska’s political history
- Alaska Shirt Company for souvenir shopping
- Tracy’s King Crab Shack for a quick bite (yes, it’s worth the hype!)
- And the Juneau-Douglas City Museum if you’re curious about the city’s Gold Rush past
8. Take to the Water for a Salmon Fishing Excursion
Want to experience an authentic Alaskan tradition while you’re in Juneau? Join a guided salmon fishing excursion and spend a few hours reeling in wild salmon! Juneau is famous for its rich salmon runs, so your chances of making a catch are high, especially in peak season (Late May through September).
Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman or a total beginner, this salmon fishing tour is beginner-friendly and fully outfitted with everything you need. It’s an awesome way to unplug, connect with nature, and enjoy some friendly competition! I’d argue that this tour is best suited for perfect for couples, families, or small groups.

9. Go on a Dog Sledding Tour
Even in the summer months, visitors can enjoy the thrill and sport of dog sledding. There are options for all budgets and ages, too, which makes this an awesome thing to do while in Juneau for any family, couple, or solo traveler.
My favorite option is the dog mushing tour atop Herbert Glacier, where you’ll fly in via helicopter, land on a vast icefield, and meet a team of energetic Alaskan huskies ready to whisk you across the snow. It’s an unforgettable adventure that combines jaw-dropping scenery with a thrill ride you’ll remember forever!
Want to go dog sledding but you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly? There’s also a summer sled dog camp experience that takes you on a mile-long ride through the forest and gives you plenty of time to meet the mushers, learn about the sport, and snuggle some adorable husky puppies. Dog sledding was one of my favorite excursions in Alaska, and I had such a fun time getting to meet the dogs and watch them do their thing on the snow!
10. Visit the Sealaska Heritage Center
If you’re in Juneau and want to learn more about Southeast Alaska’s Indigenous traditions, I highly recommend visiting the Sealaska Heritage Institute. Here you’ll learn about the stories and artistry of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian Peoples and it’s a really great introduction to learning about the Native communities that have called the Juneau area home for thousands of years.
Inside, you’ll find thought-provoking exhibits, traditional regalia and totemic art, and a stunning hand-carved cedar clan house (a sacred space that reflects the architectural style and spiritual roots of Tlingit culture). It’s a moving and educational museum that adds depth to any visit to Juneau, and it’s also a meaningful way to honor the land you’re exploring.
- Strawberry, Banana, and Nutella Crepe
- Alaskan Crepe Escape food stall
- The food stall park where you can get crepes in Juneau!
11. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at Alaskan Crepe Escape
Every time I’m in Juneau I find myself wandering back to Alaskan Crepe Escape, a beloved little spot in downtown Juneau serving up sweet and savory crepes that are so delicious! Whether you’re in the mood for something indulgent like Nutella and strawberries or a more savory option stuffed with smoked salmon and cream cheese, this cozy crepe stand has something for everyone to enjoy.
Alaska Crepe Escape is just a 10–15 minute walk from the cruise port, and the walk there takes you past some of downtown Juneau’s most charming shops and photo-worthy corners. Check out their Instagram page here to see some of their delicious crepes!
12. Eat Salmon at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake
If trying some salmon is high on your Alaska bucket list, I highly recommend going to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake in Juneau! This salmon bake excursion takes you to a festive outdoor cookout nestled in the forest just outside downtown Juneau. You’ll enjoy freshly grilled wild Alaskan salmon (plus sides and desserts!) served buffet-style in a beautiful, rustic setting.
After your meal, you can opt to take a short walk to the nearby Salmon Creek Waterfall, or explore the remnants of the historic Wagner Mine. Between the food, the setting, and the local history, this outing is a great way to spend a day in Juneau while on an Alaskan cruise!

13. Try a Beer Flight at Devil’s Club Brewing Company
If you’re a craft beer fan, Devil’s Club Brewing Company is a can’t-miss stop in downtown Juneau. This local brewery has some of the best beers on tap in Southeast Alaska. From crisp IPAs to creative seasonal brews, every pour is unique and I’ve stumbled upon a few that I’ve truly fallen in love with!
I make it a point to stop here every time I’m in Juneau (that’s how good it is). Grab a beer flight to sample a few different flavors, or go all in on a full pour of your favorite. The bartenders are pretty cool and will usually let patrons sample a few different options before committing!
The tap list changes frequently, so make sure to check their website to see what’s currently on tap!

14. Tour the Alaska State Capitol Building
Juneau is home to the Alaska State Capitol Building, and the public is permitted to enjoy a self-guided or organized tour of the building. This is a really unique way to spend an hour or two in Juneau and learn a bit about Alaska’s state governance and history.
Self-guided tours are available year-round during normal operating hours, and organized tours are available May through September each year!
15. Visit the Alaska State Museum
Immerse yourself in Alaskan history, art, and culture at the Alaska State Museum. You’ll find everything from Indigenous art and Gold Rush relics to maritime artifacts and rotating contemporary exhibits and permanent collections.
It’s a great way to connect with Alaska’s past and present. This is also a perfect way to spend a rainy day or a slower-paced afternoon in Juneau. It’s also not usually too crowded, so you’ll have plenty of space to explore at your own pace.
16. Go on the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure Tour
If you’re looking for something slightly off the beaten path, I recommend visiting Glacier Gardens. This beautifully maintained botanical garden sits right at the edge of the Tongass National Forest and gives you a unique look at Alaska’s rainforest ecosystem.
It’s about 7 miles from the cruise port, but getting there is easy with an Uber, Lyft, or taxi. Tours run seasonally from May through early October, and it’s a great way to slow down and take in a different side of Juneau!
17. Hike Perseverance Trail
One of my favorite ways to explore Alaska is by hiking some of the beautiful trails, many of which are accessible from cruise ports like the one in Juneau. One of these trails is known as Perseverance Trail! To get to the trailhead from the cruise ship, it’s about a 2-mile walk via Basin Road. You could also flag down a taxi or Uber to drive you to the trailhead pretty easily.
Once you’re at the trailhead, the hike itself is about 6-miles roundtrip (3 miles each way). There are also several notable points of interest along the trail (like Ebner Falls), as well as some other side trails that cut-off from the main trail (like Mount Juneau trail)!
18. See Spawning Salmon at Macaulay Salmon Hatchery
If you’re visiting Juneau in July or August, don’t miss the chance to see thousands of salmon swimming upstream at the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery (DIPAC). It’s a fascinating stop where you can learn about the salmon life cycle, Alaska’s sustainable fisheries, and the conservation efforts behind one of the state’s most important natural resources.
You’ll get an up-close look at the action and there’s also a small aquarium with local marine life that’s great for all ages. It’s a cool mix of education and wildlife viewing, and definitely worth a stop if you’re curious about how Alaska keeps its ecosystems thriving.
19. Eat Your Way Through Juneau on a Juneau Food Tour
If you’re a foodie like me, you’ve got to try a guided food tour through downtown Juneau.
For an immersive and hands-on experience, check out this Private Cooking Class and Cocktails Shore Excursion. You’ll learn to prepare fresh Alaskan dishes and sip on craft cocktails with a local chef. It’s a fun twist on the typical food tour and perfect if you’re craving a more lowkey, local experience.
Prefer to leave the cooking to someone else? You can also book this Private Foodie Tour of Authentic Alaskan Cuisine, where a local guide will take you to some of the best hidden culinary gems in Juneau. From wild-caught seafood, to King Crab bisque, you won’t find most of the foods featured on this tour on most cruise ship menus.
20. Take a Guided Alaskan Coastal Brown Bear Tour
If spotting wild bears is on your Alaska bucket list, you can do it in Juneau! This Pack Creek Bear Viewing excursion is one of the best ways to safely see coastal brown bears in their natural habitat while being guided by local experts who know the area inside and out.
Pack Creek is located within a protected wildlife area on Admiralty Island, also known as the “Fortress of the Bears” because of its incredibly high concentration of brown bears. Access is limited and carefully managed to preserve the environment, which makes the experience even more special.
The tour lasts about 8 hours, so you’ll want to double-check that your cruise schedule gives you enough time in port. If not, you can always reach out to the company directly. They might be able to arrange a private tour that works with your arrival and departure timing.

21. Stop By the Juneau Douglas City Museum
For visitors interested in local history, stop by the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. It’s a small but thoughtfully curated space with artifacts, interactive exhibits, and stories that highlight Juneau’s past. From Juneau’s Indigenous heritage to the Gold Rush and beyond, you’re likely to learn a lot about the area and its history at this museum!
Admission is also super affordable in the summer, making it an easy and budget-friendly stop while exploring downtown. It’s $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and free for kids 12 and under.
In the summer months (May through September) the museum is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.
22. Visit the Alaskan Brewing Company Tasting Room
If you’re into craft beer, make sure to check out the Alaskan Brewing Company Tasting Room while you’re in Juneau. This spot is home to one of Alaska’s most well-known breweries, and it’s a fun place to sample a variety of local beers. Whether you’re into something light and crisp or dark and malty, you’ll definitely find something you like at this tasting room in Juneau.
You can try a beer flight to taste a few different styles, and there’s usually something seasonal or unique on tap that you won’t find back home. It’s a relaxed, welcoming spot for anyone 21+ looking to kick back and enjoy some local flavors.
🍻 Are you a craft beer lover? Check out this fun Brews & Views tour while you’re in Juneau! 🍻
23. Learn about Gold Rush History at the Last Chance Mining Museum
If you’re into old-school Gold Rush history, the Last Chance Mining Museum is a cool spot to check out. It’s tucked away in a historic building with original mining equipment and artifacts that give you a real sense of what life was like back in the day.
Just a heads up—it’s not open every day and the hours can be a little random, so definitely take a look at their website before you go.
24. Shop at the Alaska Robotics Gallery
Despite the name, Alaska Robotics Gallery doesn’t sell robots. Instead, it’s one of the quirkiest and most creative little shops in Juneau.
You’ll find unique artwork, comics, zines, and funny prints from local and indie artists. I always love browsing here, and their postcards and prints make for awesome souvenirs or gifts. It’s a fun stop while you’re walking around downtown.
25. Go Underground on a Gold Mining Tour
If you’re curious about Juneau’s Gold Rush history, this is a really fun and hands-on way to experience it. On this underground gold mine tour, you’ll throw on a hardhat and head into actual mining tunnels to see how miners once worked beneath the mountains. A guide walks you through the history, old equipment, and what life was like during the height of the gold rush.
Some gold mining tours in Juneau also include a chance to pan for gold after you come back up to the surface, which is a fun little bonus. It’s a unique experience you won’t find on many other Alaska cruise stops.

26. Capture Iconic Photos on a Guided Photo Safari
If you love photography or just want to bring home some really great photos, consider joining a guided photo safari while you’re in Juneau. Local companies like Gastineau Guiding offer small-group tours led by knowledgeable guides who know all the best spots for capturing stunning landscapes and local wildlife. Some tours are land-based, while others take you out on the water where you might spot whales, sea lions, and glaciers up close.
There are also custom tour options available if you’re hoping to photograph something specific or explore a less-traveled area. Whether you’re using your phone or your favorite camera gear, this is a fun and unique way to experience Juneau.
27. Ride Segways or E-Bikes through the Tongass National Forest
For a fun and slightly offbeat adventure, consider riding a Segway or e-bike through the Tongass National Forest. It’s a really cool way to see Alaska’s coastal scenery without having to hike or sit on a bus all day. You’ll cruise through lush rainforest, along scenic coastline, and get to soak up some gorgeous views.
Never ridden a Segway or e-bike before? Don’t worry! The guides give a full demo and safety overview before you hit the trail, so it’s definitely beginner friendly. E-bikes are pretty easy to get the hang of after riding for a few minutes. You can also check out this Segway tour that goes through an alpine meadow and old-growth forest!
28. Try SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding) with Glacier Views
Looking for a peaceful yet totally unforgettable way to experience Juneau? Try stand-up paddleboarding with views of Mendenhall Glacier. This small-group tour takes you out on a calm, scenic lake surrounded by forest and mountains, with the iconic Mendenhall glacier as your backdrop. It’s incredibly quiet out there on the SUPs, so you’ll really feel immersed in the wild beauty of Alaska.
You also don’t need to be an expert paddler either. The tour includes a full intro and all the gear you need including dry suits, making it a great option for beginners or anyone who just wants to try something new and fun while staying active.
29. Zipline through the Rainforest
Personally, I get a bit frightened of heights but if you don’t mind heights, ziplining through the forest could be a super fun activity to do in Juneau!
This zipline tour of Douglas Island gives you a bird’s-eye view of Alaska’s lush coastal rainforest. You’ll go deep into the heart of the Tongass, with platforms high in the trees and plenty of thrills along the way.
This tour includes round-trip transportation from the cruise port and takes you out to the Eaglecrest area for the afternoon. It’s a fun way to get out into nature and add a little adrenaline to your day in Juneau!
30. Kayak around Juneau Channel Island State Marine Park
Kayaking around Juneau Channel Island State Marine Park is hands down one of the coolest excursions you can do in Juneau. You’ll take a boat out to a remote part of the Juneau Channel Islands, then hop into a kayak and paddle through calm, protected waters with a chance to see humpback whales, sea lions, and even bald eagles up close.
This is a great option for those looking for a more active whale watching experience, and way more personal than a big-group whale watching tour. You’ll want to make sure to book this tour early, though, because it does fill up since it’s a small-group adventure tour!
31. Go On a Guided Rafting Tour out to a Glacier
Maybe you want to get out on the water but you’d prefer not to do it in a solo kayak or out in the ocean. In that case, I’d highly recommend this guided rafting tour that takes you out on the water and allows you to experience great views of the Mendenhall Glacier and surrounding area. You’ll hop into a sturdy, multi-person raft with a knowledgeable guide who does the steering, so there’s no need to worry about navigating on your own.
The float tour takes you across Mendenhall Lake and down the Mendenhall River, with incredible views of the glacier, surrounding peaks, and a good chance of spotting wildlife along the way. This is an ideal option for anyone who wants to be on the water without having to manage their own watercraft or worry about the concerns associated with sea kayaking.
32. Walk the Shore of the Sentinel Island Lighthouse
Most visitors cruise right past Sentinel Island without ever stepping foot on it, which is exactly what makes this experience so special. This remote island near the Lynn Canal is home to the Sentinel Island Lighthouse, and with a guided tour, you’ll actually get to walk the shoreline, explore the lighthouse up close, and take in some pretty amazing views.
The boat ride to the island is just as epic, since the surrounding waters are known for frequent humpback and orca whale sightings. It’s a unique and scenic experience that combines history, wildlife, and adventure all in one! It’s basically a whale watching tour AND a historic Lighthouse tour in one.
33. Go on a Guided Tour of Juneau’s Main Highlights
Do you have a shorter port visit in Juneau but still want to cover a lot of ground? A guided city tour is a great way to check out Juneau’s main highlights without the hassle of figuring it all out yourself. You’ll visit local spots like downtown Juneau, Homestead Park, and the Brotherhood Bridge Glacier Lookout, plus a few hidden gems you might miss on your own.
This Juneau City Tour is a solid choice if you’re looking for a relaxed, informative way to get a feel for the city in just a few hours. It’s perfect for first-time visitors or anyone who wants to take in the scenery without doing a ton of walking or organizing your own transportation and logistics.

34. Indulge in Delicious Crab Legs at Tracy’s King Crab Shack
You really can’t visit Juneau without grabbing a meal at Tracy’s King Crab Shack. This place is legendary for its massive King Crab legs, buttery crab bisque, and a seriously loyal fan base. It’s casual, fun, and always hits the spot after a day of exploring.
If you try to go to Tracy’s right when you arrive in Juneau, you might face long lines and crowds. Rather, I recommend going right before getting back on the ship so you don’t have to deal with the hoards of people.
My personal recommendation is to try the Crab Bisque and a pound of Dungeness Crab. It’s the perfect combo, and yes, you’ll definitely thank me later.
35. Grab a Bite at Red Dog Saloon
Another iconic Juneau eatery is the Red Dog Saloon. This place has serious character and roots going all the way back to the Gold Rush days. From the moment you walk through the swinging saloon doors and onto the sawdust-covered floors, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into the 1880s!
It’s part restaurant, part old-west museum, and all-around fun. The walls are covered in quirky memorabilia, the drinks are strong, and the menu has all the pub classics with an Alaskan twist. Whether you’re just popping in for a beer or staying for a full meal, it’s one of those places you’ve got to experience at least once while you’re in town.
