What Is the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival?

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is an annual spring event held across multiple farms in Mount Vernon, Washington, celebrating the arrival of tulip season in the Skagit Valley. Each year, vibrant tulip fields bloom across roughly 250 acres, drawing visitors from all over the state and beyond.

One common misconception about the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is that it takes place on a single day or weekend. In reality, the festival runs for several weeks throughout the month of April and spans four different tulip farms. This flexible setup makes it easy to visit on your own schedule and experience the colorful rows of tulips as they bloom at different times during the season.

When Is the 2026 Skagit Valley Tulip Festival?

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival traditionally runs from April 1 through April 30 each year. However, exact start and end dates can shift slightly depending on weather conditions and how the tulips are developing that season. Cooler springs can delay blooms, while warmer weather may cause flowers to peak earlier than expected.

Even during the official festival dates, bloom conditions can vary from farm to farm, which is why flexibility is key when planning a tulip visit. Because bloom timing varies year to year, it is always a good idea to check the official festival website for the most up to date information before visiting!

Best Time to See Tulips in Skagit Valley

The best time to see tulips in Skagit Valley, Washington, is typically during the month of April. However, depending on the weather and when peak bloom occurs, tulip season can start as early as late March and extend into early May.

If you are planning a trip to Washington or Seattle specifically to see the tulips in Mount Vernon, early- to mid-April is usually the safest window for catching peak bloom across multiple farms. During this period, fields tend to be full and colorful while most farms are fully open for visitors.

For the best experience, try to visit earlier in the day during a weekday. Morning visits often mean fewer crowds, easier parking, and softer light for photos, especially on clear days. Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends, and I highly recommend prioritizing a weekday visit if your schedule allows for it!

Keep in mind that spring weather in Skagit Valley can be unpredictable. April often brings cool temperatures, rain, and muddy conditions in the fields, so dressing in layers and wearing waterproof shoes can make a big difference in how enjoyable your visit feels. Where to See Tulips in Skagit Valley

Every year in the springtime, four main farms in Mount Vernon participate in the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. This year in 2026, the four main farms participating in the festival include RoozenGaarde, Garden Rosalyn, Tulip Valley Farms, and Tulip Town. Each of these farms has gorgeous tulips on display in the spring and they’re all individually worth visiting if you have the chance!

RoozenGaarde

Best for: iconic tulip displays, fun photo opps, and the largest variety of tulips!

RoozenGaarde is easily the most iconic stop during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and it is often the first place people think of when planning a visit. The farm features a beautifully curated display garden that spans just over five acres, plus more than fifty acres of surrounding tulip and daffodil fields. Each spring, the display garden is completely redesigned and replanted, showcasing roughly 200 different tulip varieties along with daffodils, hyacinths, and other seasonal flowers, so no two years ever look exactly the same!

Garden Rosalyn

Best for: photographers or visitors looking for a quieter, more intimate tulip experience!

Garden Rosalyn offers a quieter, more intimate tulip viewing experience compared to some of the larger farms in the Skagit Valley. This family-run garden focuses on a carefully designed display area that spans several acres and highlights dozens of unique tulip varieties planted in thoughtful patterns and color combinations. It is a great stop if you want beautiful tulip photos without the scale or crowds of the biggest festival locations.

Tulip Valley Farms

Best for: families and visitors looking for an immersive “U-Pick” tulip experience!

Tulip Valley Farms is a long running, family owned farm that offers a classic Skagit Valley tulip experience with wide open fields and mountain views in the background. The farm spans more than twenty acres of tulip and daffodil fields and features dozens of tulip varieties planted in bold color blocks that photograph beautifully. It is an easy, straightforward stop if you want to walk the fields, take photos, and experience the scale of tulip season in Skagit Valley without feeling rushed.

Tulip Town

Best for: car-free travelers or visitors hoping to visit with dogs (Tulip Town is dog-friendly!)

Tulip Town is a fun, approachable stop during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and one of the most visitor-friendly farms in the area. The property includes a colorful display garden that spans several acres along with expansive surrounding tulip fields planted with dozens of tulip varieties. If you’re planning to drive in your own vehicle, I recommend pairing a visit to Tulip Town with a stop at Tulip Valley Farms since they’re pretty close to each other on the same road.

If you’re hoping to visit Tulip Town but don’t want to worry about the stressors of driving from Downtown Seattle or Downtown Bellevue, you might be in luck! In 2025, Tulip Town launched a partnership with Wanderlie to provide transportation to visitors from areas like Seattle and Bellevue at an added cost. It is unclear if they’re offering the same partnership in 2026, but you can read more about how to visit Skagit Valley car-free this year down below.

How to Visit Skagit Valley Without a Car

Mount Vernon is roughly an hour drive north of Downtown Seattle, which makes visiting the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival easiest with a car. That said, it is possible to visit Skagit Valley without a car if you are willing to plan ahead.

If you want the most straightforward car-free option, booking a guided tulip tour from Seattle is your best bet. These tours typically include roundtrip transportation, stop at one or more tulip farms, and sometimes include additional sightseeing in the Skagit Valley area.

This option removes the stress of coordinating transportation and is ideal if you are visiting Seattle without a car or only have one day available. The downside is less flexibility compared to visiting independently, but the convenience often makes it worth it. You can check out some guided tour options from Seattle to see the tulips this season down below.

Photography Tips for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Morning is the best time to photograph the tulip fields, especially on clear days. You’ll usually find fewer people, easier parking, and softer light that brings out the colors of the flowers. Late afternoon can work, too, but crowds tend to pick up at the most popular farms like RoozenGaarde.

When taking photos, always stick to designated paths and be mindful of where you step. It’s important not to walk into the fields or step on any tulips. Respecting the farms and the flowers helps keep the festival running year after year. The farms take this very seriously and if you repeatedly ignore the rules, you can risk being kicked out.

I also recommend skipping tripods. They are often discouraged during busy festival days and can be frustrating to manage in crowded spaces. Handheld photos are more than enough to capture how beautiful the tulip fields really are!

Where to Stay Near the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

If you are planning a trip to Mount Vernon for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, staying overnight can make the experience much more relaxed, especially if you want to visit multiple farms or arrive early to beat the crowds. There are several good towns near the tulip fields, each with a slightly different vibe depending on what you are looking for.

Mount Vernon, WA

Mount Vernon is the most convenient place to stay since it puts you closest to all four tulip farms that are part of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. You’ll find a mix of hotels, budget-friendly options, and a few vacation rentals, making it a solid choice if your main goal is easy access to the fields. Staying here also makes it easier to visit early in the morning or return later in the day without a long drive.

La Conner, WA

La Conner is a charming waterfront town about fifteen minutes from the tulip fields and a great option if you want a more scenic, small town stay. It’s known for its walkable downtown, waterfront views, and cozy inns, making it a popular choice for couples or anyone turning their tulip visit into a weekend getaway!

Burlington, WA

Burlington is another convenient option located just south of Mount Vernon with easy access to I-5. It tends to have more nationally-recognized hotel chains and slightly lower prices, which can be a good fit if you are looking for something straightforward and budget-friendly, or if you’re hoping to use points on your stay at a well-known hotel chain.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Is the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival worth it?

Absolutely, yes! I loved my experience visiting Roozengaarde Farm to see the tulips as part of last year’s Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, and I highly recommend it to both locals and out of state visitors.

If possible, I recommend visiting on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds, especially if you’re hoping for a more relaxed experience. Thousands of people descend upon Mount Vernon during weekends in April to see the tulip fields, and the crowds can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Parking is also more difficult to find on weekends, particularly at midday. One of the biggest perks about going on a guided tulip tour from Seattle is that you don’t have to worry about parking or waiting in line!

Are dogs allowed at the tulip farms?

The short answer is that it depends. Some farms allow dogs, others have a strict no-dog policy. For example, Tulip Town is dog-friendly but RoozenGaarde is not dog-friendly. It’s important to follow the rules and clean up after your dog if you’re visiting a dog-friendly farm!

Can you walk between tulip farms?

Unfortunately, the farms are a bit too spread out to be able to walk between them. The farms are all within a few miles of each other but it’s not as walkable between them as it might look on the map. Plus, sidewalks are limited or nonexistent and the road is uneven in certain spots, making it unsafe to attempt to walk between all of the farms.

The only two farms that you could potentially walk between are Tulip Town and Tulip Valley Farms. You could absolutely park at one and walk to the other because it’s only about a five minute walk down Bradshaw Road. To visit Roozengaarde and Garden Rosalyn, I recommend driving between them and parking at the specific farm site.
